Heroes Reborn not returning for second season

(Steve Wilkie/NBC)

Call it Heroes: Recanceled.

NBC’s superhero drama is finished … again. Okay, so fall’s Heroes: Reborn reboot was always billed as a close-ended limited series. This is still television and Heroes isn’t exactly Roots — you have to assume that if Reborn had been a ratings hit instead of a disappointment on Thursday nights, NBC would have eagerly made another round.

But on Wednesday, NBC’s entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt confirmed to reporters that the show is done … for now.

“[One season] was always the plan, unless [creator Tim Kring] woke up one day and said, ‘I have another chapter to tell,’ ” Greenblatt said. “But I think we’re coming to the end of the world, maybe. Stay tuned. As far as I know, there are no more incarnations of Heroes coming.”

Heroes originally launched in 2006 and ran for four seasons. NBC reassembled some of the original cast and added new characters played by Zachary Levi, Ryan Guzman and others to launch Reborn last fall.
