The X-Files: David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson try to explain their tension to Jimmy Kimmel |

Jimmy Kimmel wants to know 'what is going on' between David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson

On Tuesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel broke it to The X-Files’ Mulder and Scully that it isn’t the ’90s anymore — but in the process of filming that sketch, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson taught Kimmel the same lesson.

“I was under the impression that you guys didn’t like each other when you were shooting the show,” Kimmel told the longtime costars when they stopped by his couch, expressing surprise at how much “camraderie” there is between them now.

“Well, you made us have sex,” Anderson joked, referring to the sketch.

But she and Duchovny were quick to agree that their relationship wasn’t always where it is now, though Anderson’s explanation wasn’t what anyone expected.

“We shot in Vancouver, and it’s very moist in Vancouver,” she began before collapsing into laughter at Duchovny’s reaction. As Anderson experimented with different places to hide her face, Kimmel watched the pair prove his point: They’re “very friendly to each other.”

“What is going on between you two?” the host asked.

Anderson eventually managed to explain that the time it took to fix her “frizzy” hair delayed every take, which may have compounded the tension on set — an answer that made Duchovny see himself in a new light.

“It kind of makes me sound like an a–hole.”

The X-Files returns Jan. 24 on Fox.
