The table is set for Richard Gere, Steve Coogan, and Laura Linney. The three veteran actors will star in writer-director Oren Moverman’s drama The Dinner, Protagonist Pictures announced Monday.
Chloë Sevigny and Rebecca Hall have also been cast in the movie, which starts shooting this week in New York City.
Based on the bestselling novel by Dutch author Herman Koch, The Dinner centers on two adult brothers (Coogan and Gere) and their spouses (Linney and Hall) who meet for a meal at a swanky restaurant to discuss a dark secret that involves their respective children.
Moverman, who recently penned Love & Mercy and directed Gere in Time Out of Mind, adapted Koch’s novel and stepped in to direct after Cate Blanchett departed. The Australian actress had been attached to make her film directing debut.
In Monday’s announcement, Moverman called The Dinner “an extraordinarily provocative, conscience-bending ride that takes on culturally relevant issues and turns them into an intricate menu of human passions and primal fears.”
Cotty Chubb, Lawrence Inglee, Eddie Vaisman, and Julia Lebedev are producing the film. Protagonist is handling international sales for The Dinner and will shop it at the European Film Market in Berlin next month.
