Is Robin Hood heading toward a grim fate? If the Internet rumors about Once Upon a Time are to be believed, then yes. But the powers that be behind OUAT want fans to, well, keep hope alive.
In light of the growing concern that Sean Maguire will soon be exiting the ABC fairy tale series, EW hit up the OUAT bosses on what they want to say to fans who may be losing hope over Regina (Lana Parrilla) getting a happy ending. “I would say that we were just picked up for another year, so the story continues,” EP Edward Kitsis says. “That’s like being mad in the middle of Hunger Games because she didn’t win. You’ve got to wait until the end of the book.” Adds EP Adam Horowitz: “Regina’s on a journey that’s going to have ups and downs along the way. We’re in the middle of the story.”
It’s not particularly surprising that fans are worried. After all, Robin is among those who traveled to the Underworld to rescue Hook (Colin O’Donoghue). The most recent episode even ended with a not-so-thinly veiled threat from Hades (Greg Germann): Three of his damned souls have moved on to the afterlife, so three of Emma’s (Jennifer Morrison) group will have to stay behind — and Hook must decide who!
Still, Robin’s fate is not set in stone, because, what else? Hope. “This is a show about hope, and I think it’s a show that shows you that happy endings have to be earned, they’re not easy and neither is hope,” Kitsis says. “It’s the day to day struggles of how we achieve that.”
Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
