As Fear the Walking Dead heads to the sea in season 2, there’s one very important question fans may be wondering: Can zombies swim?
The second season of the Walking Dead spin-off finds Madison (Kim Dickens), Travis (Cliff Curtis), and the gang setting sail on the mysterious Victor Strand’s (Colman Domingo) yacht the Abigail in search of sanctuary.
“Zombies can’t swim,” executive producer Dave Erickson said at the AMC series’ PaleyFest panel on Saturday. “They can wade. That’s something we experimented with when we shot the first episode. We’ve figured out the best ways to shoot water zombies. They don’t drown. They keep floating back up.”
But zombies won’t be the only threat in season 2, especially since there are others who had the same idea of leaving the land behind. “There’s going to be threats, obstacles, and conflicts on sea as well as on land,” Erickson said, noting that the Abigail is very coveted.

The ultimate goal, is “to find a place where they can drop anchor and stay,” Erickson said. “The great thing about the Abigail is they have fairly extensive range. We don’t know, when we first hit the water, which direction we’re going. Strand has some ideas, but we don’t know how much we can trust those ideas.”
Trust will certainly be an issue in the second season, especially given the group doesn’t know much about Strand. “He’s an enigma wrapped in a riddle,” Domingo said. Added Erickson: “We will learn much more about Strand in season 2.”
