Elisabeth Moss will have some new company when Top of the Lake returns.
Gwendoline Christie, the English actress known for playing statuesque warriors like Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones and Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is joining Moss in the second season of the mystery miniseries from BBC Two and SundanceTV.
Set four years after the season 1 finale, season 2 finds detective Robin Griffin (Moss) investigating the death of an unidentified Asian girl whose body washes up on Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Details about Christie’s character have not been revealed, though the role is described as a major one.
Also joining the cast are David Dencik (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures), and Ewen Leslie (The Daughter).
Jane Campion will return to helm the second season of Top of the Lake, along with new co-director Ariel Kleiman, and Campion will once again co-write with Gerard Lee.
The six one-hour episodes will premiere on BBC Two in the U.K. in 2017 and air later in the year on SundanceTV in the U.S.
