A remake of the 1985 film Starman is in the works, to be directed and produced by Real Steel’s Shawn Levy, EW has confirmed. The script will be penned by Grace of Monaco writer Arash Amel.
John Carpenter’s original film followed the story of an alien (Jeff Bridges) who comes to earth and assumes the body of a woman’s (Karen Allen) dead husband. The two journey to Arizona so the alien can rendezvous with his people; along the way, romance blossoms. The genre-mixing, character-based sci-fi romance resulted in an Academy Award nomination for Bridges.
In addition to Real Steel, Levy’s recent directorial work includes the Night at the Museum films. He’s also been busy as a producer, having worked on three upcoming films: Table 19, Dennis Villeneuve’s Story of Your Life, and the Ice Cube/Charlie Day comedy Fist Fight.
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report the remake news.
