Jack Reacher, Ninja Turtles, XXX, and Ring sequels teased at CinemaCon

So many planes!

(Karen Ballard)

Paramount kicked off CinemaCon 2016 with a look at its upcoming slate of films. That included an extended look at four major sequels coming to theaters over the next year. Let’s run down what we saw in Vegas on Monday.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

The footage screened featured Tyler Perry’s Baxter Stockman working with Shredder to create a couple of iconic Turtles bad guys, Bebop and Rocksteady. Also joining the cast: Stephen Amell, playing hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones. But the most eye-popping thing in the Turtles 2 trailer was a plane-to-plane action scene, which involved the four half-shelled heroes sky-jumping onto an aircraft. (Said aircraft also contains a tank, because no reason to be subtle in the sixth Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.)

More notable for hardcore TMNT-heads is that Out of the Shadows appears to center on a minor existential crisis for the Turtles, when they discover that the all-important purple ooze can possibly turn them into regular human beings. I’m not sure if this has any root in the Turtles mythology, but at least they aren’t aliens.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Tom Cruise appeared in a video, promising distributors he was already hard at work on Mission: Impossible 6. But to tide us over, he debuted footage from his new Jack Reacher film, which features Reacher partnering up with a younger military investigator played by Cobie Smulders. Cruise explained that Never Go Back would have “the usual Reacher twists and turns,” and would also have “real classic movie-movie stuff.”

XXX: The Return of Xander Cage

Vin Diesel also appeared via video direct from the Toronto set of the third XXX movie. They didn’t show any scenes, but Diesel did declare that the movie has “the best cast ever assembled.” In fairness, how many other movies have starred Rory “The Hound” McCann, Ruby Rose, Tony Jaa, and Toni Collette?

Rings

The teaser for the latest iteration of J-horror classic The Ring might sound familiar. A man tells a woman that he watched a weird video, and then a voice on the phone told him he would die in seven days. The punchline: He got that call seven days ago! The twist: The man is telling this to the woman on an airplane, which experiences some serious turbulence – and then the iconically weird Ring video starts playing on the little TV in front of everyone’s TV set.

That’s right: RINGS ON A PLANE!!!

Star Trek Beyond

Although mega-producer J.J. Abrams was on hand to receive the convention’s Showman of the Year prize, there was curiously no footage from this summer’s prequel-threequel. But Abrams did declare his full support of the film, directed by Fast & Furious director Justin Lin. “It is looking, I am envious to say, like the most thrilling Star Trek yet,” said Abrams. Better than First Contact, though? We shall see on July 22, 2016.
