Jimmy Kimmel dares to find out if people know Avengers better than U.S. presidents

(ABC)

The joy and the frustration of Marvel’s superhero movies is the need to follow dozens of characters and intricate plotlines building over the course of several movies. On Wednesday, Jimmy Kimmel asked: have Americans become more knowledgeable about this fictional history than real-life American history? Do people on the street know more Avengers than U.S. presidents?

The first person interviewed certainly did. This woman named Captain America, Hawkeye, the Hulk, Iron Man, and Black Widow as Avengers, but couldn’t think of presidents past Barack Obama and George Washington. The next guy got even more Avengers — adding Thor, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver to the bunch — but couldn’t name a single real president, producing only the mysterious mash-up “Grover Washington.”

Some people weren’t good at naming either category, of course. A couple people could only name DC heroes like Batman and Superman, and one woman confused the Avengers with Power Rangers (which would be the equivalent of listing Ross Perot and Donald Trump as presidents.

Toward the end, one woman ran off a lengthy list of presidents in song form, though she did end up forgetting Calvin Coolidge.

“First rule of naming presidents is never forget Calvin Coolidge,” Kimmel said.
