P!nk’s first single in three years was last month’s anthemic “Just Like Fire,” written for the upcoming fantasy film, Alice Through the Looking Glass. To gather inspiration, the pop singer got to see the movie early. Though she empathized a lot with Alice — whom she called “badass” and “fierce” — she identified with a pair of other characters.
“Some days I’m the Red Queen for sure,” she said through laughter during a Facebook Live Q&A. “Most of the time I feel like the Mad Hatter.”
Her 4-year-old daughter, Willow, was in the background and cracked up at the Mad Hatter crack. “Is that funny? See, she likes my jokes.”
The singer also revealed some differences between writing for herself and for a movie.
“It’s completely different. When I write songs for myself, it’s 100 percent narcissistic and self-involved; it’s all about my problems,” she said. “When I write for a movie, it’s inspired by their story. I’ve actually done it a couple of times, and I’ve gotten to keep the songs, because they got rejected. I’m really glad, because now they’re mine, and I never would have been able to write such a focused song without the movie’s inspiration.”
