The Big Bang Theory will finally welcome Leonard’s father to the show during Thursday’s season finale — which could shockingly lead to a big change for the lovable geeks in Pasadena.
In the penultimate episode, Leonard’s mother Beverly (Christine Baranski) revealed her displeasure over not being invited to Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny’s (Kaley Cuoco) shotgun Vegas wedding. “Penny thought it would be nice to have a little informal ceremony to renew their vows and this would be an opportunity for them to actually invite their friends and family to be there for it,” executive producer Steve Molaro says of the finale. “That opens the door for us to meet Leonard’s father, Alfred.”
Alfred (Judd Hirsch), as we’ll come to learn, is an anthropologist who is very similar to his son — both on screen and off. “The day we had the table read, Judd walked in and Kaley looked at him and just said, ‘Oh my God, it’s like he is your father,'” Molaro says. “We knew we were in good shape. As soon as Judd walked in, it just seemed right.”
Unfortunately, Alfred and Beverly do not “have a good relationship,” Molaro says. “There’s a little bit of tension; so much tension that even Sheldon picks up on it.” That tension is the last thing Leonard and Penny want after their first wedding didn’t go as planned. “They might be hoping to have some sort of ceremony that’s filled with a little more love and a little less fighting,” Molaro says. “In this particular finale, we don’t really get that far.”
The reason for that? A cliffhanger involving Alfred, who will find common ground with Sheldon’s mother (Laurie Metcalf). “An unexpected attraction springs up between Sheldon’s father and Leonard’s mother,” Molaro says. “There’s a shared dislike of Beverly and a genuine fondness of each other. Leonard’s father, it turns out, is a pretty charming guy.” For the record, if Sheldon’s mother and Leonard’s father were to end up together, that would make the two scientists brothers. Likely reaction from Sheldon: Joy over making a “Brother Agreement.” From Leonard: Well, this.
Elsewhere in the finale, the guidance system Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) has been working on with Sheldon and Leonard takes a giant leap forward. “Wolowitz is continuing with their patented invention that’s been going on and has a little more success with that,” Molaro says. “He’s contacted cryptically by the Air Force about it,” which provides a heavy dose of comedy in the season ender.
