Awkward‘s Jenna (Ashley Rickards) and Matty (Beau Mirchoff) have been through a lot this season: They broke up. They got new significant others. They worked through their post-breakup anger. And then they finally became friends. But that might change in the MTV show’s season 5 finale.
“Matty has realized what’s important in his life,” Mirchoff tells EW. “And he’s going to try to put things in line that make that realization happen, so he makes a grand gesture of the romantic type in the finale. It doesn’t go as expected.”
However, executive producer Mike Chessler says there will definitely be some closure. “When we thought about bringing this season to a close, we really wanted to end this chapter of the Jenna and Matty story on a moment that would really satisfy what has been the ongoing arc of will they or won’t they,” he teases. “What happens in this episode really brings that story to a good end of the chapter, a good closing for it. It opens up what their future is as well.”
Aside from the Matty-Jenna drama, executive producer Chris Alberghini hints that “an old friend” is returning to the show. “She helps manage a very difficult emotional crisis in the episode,” he says. And that “old friend” isn’t the only ghost from Awkward’s past making a return.
“You’ll see a lot of things that were set up in the pilot of the show called back and paid off in ways that hopefully are unexpected and fun,” Chessler says. “We’ve tried to make it so that every character is making a decision about their life at the end, and I think it’s going to be very satisfying.”
Mirchoff adds: “It goes out on a rather happy note.”
Watch the hour-long Awkward finale when it airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
