BET announced the lineup for their planned Prince tribute on Tuesday, which would have been the Purple One’s 58th birthday. Prince protégé Sheila E., the Roots, D’Angelo, Janelle Monae, and others will honor the late singer during the Sunday, June 26 ceremony.
“You can count on memorable performances and moments in honor of a true legend,” said Stephen Hill, BET’s president of programming, in a statement.
Anticipation for the network’s plans began mounting after Madonna closed out the Billboard Music Awards with a performance of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Purple Rain.” After they left the stage, BET posted a since-deleted clip of Madge’s rendition with the caption, “Yeah, we saw that. Don’t worry. We Got You.” (Questlove, who introduced the performance, and Madonna both fired back in defense.)
Monday, EW revealed that the annual event would be hosted again by Black-ish stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross.
