Jeff Goldblum’s induction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe was made official last month when he was announced as part of the cast of Thor: Ragnarok.

The actor will play the game-playing elder known as the Grandmaster, and recently opened up about the character and his excitement to work with the threequel’s cast and director.

“He’s a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker, an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells. I thought, ‘I can do that, I’ll bet!’” he told Empire. “I’m working on my part every day. I’m a sponge, researching.”

“[Director Taika Waititi] is encouraging me to improvise and make it my own, and that’s what I’m trying to do,” he added. “I hope he doesn’t throw me out on the first day!”

Goldblum told Empire that he’s expecting to film for “three weeks or a month” in Brisbane, Australia. “Not only Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Anthony Hopkins… jeez, that’s gonna be fun. I’ve never been to Australia except to do these little publicity things.”

Directed by Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows), Thor: Ragnarok will arrive in theaters on Nov. 3, 2017. Goldblum will be seen next in Independence Day: Resurgence, out June 24.
