Babs is back for Broadway’s biggest night. Barbra Streisand appeared at the Tony Awards for the first time since 1970 and presented the award for Best Musical.
“Tonight our joy is tinged with sorrow. But we’re here to celebrate Broadway,” she told the crowd, referencing the mass shooting that took place in Orlando, Florida early Sunday morning in a gay nightclub, “and the beauty that artistry can bring into this world. I’m very thankful to be in the company of the people in this theater, the artists who write the plays, the composers and the lyricists who write the songs, and the actors who bring them to life. Art can entertain us and educate us and at times like this, console us.”
She then presented the award for Best Musical to Hamilton. “Thank God I picked the right outfit,” she said, motioning to her ruffled white shirt, clearly an homage to the show’s eighteenth century setting.
