Comedy Central is doing the most with the roast. Less than a week after the network revealed that Rob Lowe would be the honoree at the next Comedy Central Roast, the network announced that it will air Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle, a mano a mano “Thunderdome” comedy event in which two competitors hurl wickedly funny insults at each other while a panel of “all-star” judges decide the winner.

Best known for his barbs in the Comedy Central Roasts — and for going behind bars to roast inmates at a Texas prison last year — Ross will lead the festivities along with referee/comedian Brian Moses. The four-part special, which is being filmed at Montreal’s Just For Laughs festival, will air July 28–31 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, with the finals airing on the last night.

“Think Fight Club for comedians where anything goes,” said Ross in a statement, adding: “It’s the Olympics of insults and sometimes feelings get hurt. I got to give Comedy Central props for having the guts to put something so dangerous on the air.”

In addition, a “Roast to Roast Battle” tour is taking place this week in such cities as Austin, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City, and those face-offs will be filmed for a companion special to air July 24 at midnight ET/PT.
