Dave Grohl’s party stories are way better than your party stories. Case in point: The episode he recounted during a solo performance Wednesday night at the Cannes Lions festival. Between songs, Grohl told the audience about partying with Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney — and the mortifying experience he barely avoided.

The 47-year-old Foo Fighters frontman set the scene by explaining that McCartney — who Grohl called “the baddest motherf—er in the world” — hopped on a piano at the party and began banging out a new song, much to the enjoyment of the party’s guests. But Grohl’s mood quickly turned when those same guests asked him to play a song of his own.

“Well, I don’t know how to play piano. Like, I don’t know what to do, man! I can’t play f—ing piano!” Grohl said he remembered thinking. “And then I look around and Paul McCartney’s left-handed, so all the guitars are left-handed. ‘S—! God, I’m screwed! What do I do?’ And also, I’d maybe smoked a little pot, so… I was already challenged enough.”

That’s when Grohl says Swift intervened: “She’s like, ‘I’ll play a song!’ It’s like, ‘Oh, thank god. Taylor Swift’s here. Like f—ing Batman when you need him.’” From there, despite being “super high,” Grohl decided to jam with Swift and grabbed one of McCartney’s left-handed bass guitars from the wall. “I’m just trying to figure out how to play along to what she’s doing,” Grohl recalled. “It was kind of like one of those nightmares where you’re running backwards.”

That’s when Grohl turned to his wife and realized that the “really beautiful thing” Swift was playing on piano was the Foo Fighters hit “Best of You.” “And as if I weren’t high enough, that f—ing blew me into outer space, man!” Grohl said.

Then, of course, he launched into his own rendition of “Best of You” for the Cannes crowd. Check out footage of his story and performance below.
