Ewan McGregor is going big and deep with his directorial debut.

The actor is helming and starring in the adaption of Philip Roth’s novel American Pastoral, whose first trailer appeared Thursday via Vanity Fair.

Shots of the U.S. in the ’60s are scored to a slowed version of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” — after a quiet view of a post office is disrupted by an explosion. Seymour “Swede” Levov (McGregor) and his wife Dawn (Jennifer Connelly) try to recover after discovering their rebellious teenager daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) was behind the effort.

American Pastoral netted Roth the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It also appears on Time’s 100 Best Novels list.

McGregor is currently filming the sequel to Trainspotting, per VF, and will also lead season 3 of FX’s Fargo as a set of twins.

American Pastoral is set for an Oct. 21 limited release.
