House of Cards actor Mahershala Ali lends his powerful voice to the audiobook version of Free State of Jones, and EW is excited to debut a new clip from the book below.

Originally published in 2001, Free State, written by author Victoria E. Bynum, captured a small but vital piece of Southern history. She examines the Jones Country rebellion, which took place during the Civil War. Confederate deserters rebelled against the Southern army in order to remain a part of the Union.

For his reading, Ali, who also plays Moses Washington in the film adaption, wanted to let the text speak for itself. “Recording The Free State of Jones was an education on so many levels,” he said. “I quickly discovered that it’s not a text that necessarily needed elevating. I found that my task was simply to move out of the way, and allow this rich, historically dense narrative to speak for itself.”

Listen to Ali read in the clip below, and find the full audiobook at here. See Ali in Free State of Jones, also starring Matthew McConaughey, in theaters today, June 24.
