Filming The Strain can be quite intense. So, in between takes, the cast tries its hardest to lighten the mood and to have fun with each other — especially star Kevin Durand.
“I love to scare the bejeezus out of everybody,” said Durand when the cast of The Strain stopped by the EW lounge at San Diego Comic-Con. “But, it’s playful,” he added, before growling in castmate Miguel Gomez’s ear. “We have to be light and joke around because then we have to jump into this [the show].”
Richard Sammel added, “It’s so intense and so draining that in between takes we just do the opposite, and it becomes completely crazy and freaking out and having a lot of fun. The degree of how far we just go crazy and put a lot of fun in it is actually a sign for how intense it is during the takes.”
The cast of the FX horror drama also took the time to preview what’s in store for season 3, which premieres at the end of August. The second season ended with the formation of an unlikely alliance as Fet (Durand), Gus (Gomez), Abraham, Quinlan, and Angel escaped together in a boat.
“Alliances are formed and people start to realize who’s who and who’s on what side, and it’s real interesting the way our characters sort of interact this season,” said Gomez.
“I know Dutch has formed an unlikely alliance and that’s been brilliant because I’ve got to work with an actor I really wanted to work with,” teased Ruta Gedmintas, adding, “I’m not going to tell you it is.”
