The Vidiots Foundation has announced that actor Harry Dean Stanton will receive the organization’s first-ever Harry Dean Stanton Award, which will annually recognize a member of the film community whose body of work has helped define American cinema. Stanton will accept the award Oct. 23 at the Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, where he will be honored with an evening of conversation, film clips, and music.
The event will be hosted by longtime Stanton pal Ed Begley Jr. and will include performances and tributes from Kris Kristofferson — who appeared with the actor in the 1972 thriller Cisco Pike — along with Father John Misty, Inara George, Jack Huston, Harper Simon, and others to be named at a later date. Vidiots is producing the event with Stanton friends Sophie Huber, Laila Nabulsi, Harper Simon, and Logan Sparks.
Stanton’s many acting credits include Repo Man, The Godfather Part II, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, Pretty in Pink, Wild at Heart, and Paris, Texas. The actor will soon be seen in the upcoming Twin Peaks TV show and in American Horror Story star John Carroll Lynch’s directorial debut, Lucky.
Vidiots Foundation, named after the Santa Monica video store that birthed the organization, is a nonprofit dedicated to the cinematic arts. It showcases the work of emerging and master artists by presenting unique film events and preserving and providing access to the foundation’s library of over 50,000 titles. Next month, Vidiots is launching an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to support a slate of new programming and preservation initiatives. The evening honoring Stanton will mark the conclusion of that campaign.
