Renée Zellweger doesn’t judge Bridget Jones.
In her new movie Bridget Jones’s Baby, the beloved British singleton finds herself pregnant – and the dad could be either her ex Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) or her handsome one-night stand Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey). When Zellweger first learned the plot, her reaction was simply “sounds about right,” the actress, 47, tells Jess Cagle, the Editorial Director of PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly, in this week’s PEOPLE cover story.
“I didn’t feel myself judging her about it,” says Zellweger. “There’s such a sweetness to who she is, such as purity to who she is as a person, that I wasn’t really thinking ‘Tart.'”
Ultimately, Zellweger, 47, says she’s happy that the plot of Bridget Jones’s Baby is “challenging social paradigms.” Her character has learned to stop predicating her well-being on outside sources, and instead the actress explains, “She’s defining happiness for herself.”
