If you’re one of the more than 8 million people who have shed a tear watching the This Is Us trailer, get ready: The show is hitting NBC on Tuesday, and star Milo Ventimiglia has some deep thoughts on the project.

“It’s the ups and downs of life: a whole lot of laughter, a whole lot of tears, a whole lot of life,” he says.

The cast of This Is Us sat down with EW to talk about their new show, which is written and produced by the team behind Crazy, Stupid, Love. and is being touted as the next Parenthood. Ventimiglia (Jack), Mandy Moore (who plays his pregnant-with-triplets wife Rebecca), and recent Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown (who plays Randall, a man looking to connect with his biological father) chatted about the show and what it will mean to audiences looking for something a little deeper than your typical sitcom or soap opera.

“There’s somebody that everyone can sort of relate to, and I think that’s something very comforting, in knowing that you’re not alone,” says Brown.

As Ventimiglia sums up, “You have a show about what I think we all strive for, and that’s happiness and peace. But life never really gives us that.”

Check out the video below for the full scoop, and tune in to This Is Us Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on NBC.
