Lynn Hartman, the fiancée of convicted killer and Making a Murderer subject Steven Avery, will appear in her first sit-down interview with Dr. Phil.
Hartman’s interview, in which she is expected to describe how love blossomed between her and a convicted murderer whose story captivated America last winter, is set to air Monday and Tuesday.
“I believe he’s innocent,” Hartman tells Dr. Phil in a preview. “He needs help.”
“There are a lot of people that want to help him that don’t want to marry him,” Dr. Phil countered.
Avery and Hartman, a legal secretary, began exchanging letters earlier this year and met in person for the first time two weeks ago, the Dr. Phil show said. Avery has been held in several Wisconsin prisons since 2007, when he, along with his nephew Brendan Dassey, was convicted in 25-year-old Teresa Halbach’s murder.
Avery will contribute to the interview by calling in, making his first television interview since the release of the documentary Making a Murderer on Netflix in December 2015.
“I haven’t been in love my whole life,” Avery said. “It’s not the same as the others. Everything is different with her.”
Dassey’s conviction was recently overturned, though Avery, who has maintained his innocence throughout, told Dr. Phil, “The truth is coming out and sooner or later, all the truth will come out.”
The preview also shows Dr. Phil asking Hartman a chilling question: “He’s been involved in burglaries, he burned a cat alive. What might he do if he gets frustrated with you?”
