Marvel Studios has promised its new, Benedict Cumberbatch-starring superhero movie Doctor Strange (out Nov. 4) will be a trippy affair – and that weirdness is evident in a just-released teaser. The clip shows Cumberbatch’s titular Sorcerer Supreme facing off against Mads Mikkelsen’s villainous Kaecilius, kissing Rachel McAdams’ emergency room doctor Christine Palmer, and looking surprised as Tilda Swinton’s androgynous Ancient One gives his forehead a good thumbing.
What’s so weird about all that? Well, quite a lot. But also? Much of it plays out in reverse.
The spot will do nothing to quiet widespread rumors that the film features some sort of time travel. Certainly, Doctor Strange is going to contain some sort of temporal shenanigans, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige himself made clear last year when talking to EW about Strange’s powerful artifact, the Eye of Agamotto. “In this film, the Eye is a very important relic that can be quite dangerous if used in the wrong hands,” said Feige, “because it has the ability to do any number of things, the most dangerous of which is, it can sort of manipulate probabilities. Which is another way of saying ‘screw around with time’ — which is part of our story.”
Directed by Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange costars Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor. You can see that new spot for the film below.
