Comedian Norm Macdonald‘s memoir Based on a True Story is darkly hilarious, and EW is excited to share an exclusive excerpt from the audiobook, read by the author himself.

In the book, the SNL vet tells the story of his life, from growing up in remote Canada to becoming a Weekend Update anchor. In this excerpt, Macdonald tells the story of his greatest show as a standup, which happened to be at a hospital for the criminally insane in the middle of nowhere. The tale about his experience is amusing and freaky as Macdonald makes the mistake of asking about one of the patients’ crimes and learns the truly disturbing story of how he tortured his mother to death. Minutes later, he takes the stage.

Find out what happens in the audio excerpt below. Based on a True Story is out now from Penguin Random House Audio.
