Hopefully you’ve spent part of the weekend watching Netflix’s new series, The Crown (and if not, you really should start — it’s great!) and seen Matt Smith’s portrayal of Prince Philip. When EW sat down with the actor, he was able to see a link between his current alter ego and his last, the Eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who. “Philip is an alien in this world,” he says. “He’s a total outsider.”
Playing the Doctor on the BBC series means there’s a certain segment of the population that will freak insanely out when they meet Smith (EW was a witness to one fan encounter), and that there’s constant chatter on the possibility that the actor could return in some capacity to the cult favorite show.
When asked, Smith laughs. “There are rumors that I’m coming back?” he says. “There’s always rumors. I don’t know…. I haven’t been approached. I would consider any approach and take it very seriously.”
He still watches the show regularly. “I’m a huge fan,” he shares. “I will always support it as it gave me such a wonderful break.”
Peter Capaldi became the Twelfth Doctor after Smith departed and Smith is a big admirer of the Scottish actor’s portrayal. We wondered, did he give Capaldi any advice? “Yes, I did,” says Smith. “Listen to no one. There’s so many opinions out there and you’ve got to filter so many of those voices out. On that show, you’ve got to have a clear vision and Peter obviously does. He’s wonderful.”
