Honest Trailers is giving the gift of laughs this holiday season, shining the light on Christmas classic.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is the latest victim to fall into Screen Junkies’ crosshairs. The broad strokes of the plot involve the titular, maligned hero fulfilling the destiny of the popular carol. There’s way more to the movie than that, prompting Screen Junkies to insist that families thought, “Man, this movie is so much weirder than I remember.”

The video broke down the movie with song, set to the tune of the carol itself. The main eight reindeer are cruel to Rudolph, and “treat him like he’s got the plague. They send him into exile, ‘Cause this Santa’s full of rage.” No one is spared, including Hermey, “one of the elf slaves,” who has designs of becoming a dentist. Oh, don’t forget the crazy Island of Misfit Toys and the yeti.

Though Rudolph comes back and saves Christmas by guiding the sleigh with his illuminated nose, the takeaway isn’t one to teach the next generation about. “The moral of the story is that being different’s bad unless your defect’s useful,” the sing-along insists about the movie that’s “Lord of the Rings for kids on acid.”
