The title isn’t kidding around — there’s an all-out war between humans and primates in the first trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes.

In this third offering in the film franchise, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes find themselves in a deadly battle with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel, played by Woody Harrelson.

After the apes suffer tremendous losses, Caesar finds himself wrestling with his darker instincts and begins a quest to avenge his kind, and that journey ultimately brings him and the Colonel face to face for an action-packed showdown that will determine the fate of both their species.

“All of human history has led to this moment,” the Colonel says. “The irony is we created you — and nature has been punishing us ever since. This is our last stand, and if we lose it will be a planet of apes.”

At New York Comic-Con earlier this year, director Matt Reeves said this film would follow a darker Caesar, one who is still deeply affected by his actions in the previous film, when he had to fight a member of his own kind, Koba (Toby Kebbell). “Caesar understands exactly why Koba felt the way he did because he gets pushed to the extremes of war… The question is, will he be able to transcend the darkness inside of him?”

War for the Planet of the Apes, also starring Steve Zahn, Amiah Miller, Karin Konoval, and Terry Notary,  hits theaters on July 14. Watch the trailer above and see the new poster below.
