Nicole Kidman is busy roaring her way through awards season in Garth Davis’ emotional drama Lion, and judging by the first still of her character in Top of the Lake‘s second season, she now has the mane to back it up.
Subtitled China Girl, Top of the Lake season 2 sees Elisabeth Moss reprising her Golden Globe-winning role as Detective Robin Griffin, who returns to Sydney, Australia, in an effort to rebuild her life. Shortly after, the body of an unidentified Asian woman washes ashore on Bondi Beach, and Robin quickly becomes entangled in the hunt for her killer after discovering the “China Girl” didn’t die alone.
According to a press release, “Robin’s search to discover ‘China Girl’s’ identity takes her into the city’s criminal underbelly and closer than she could have imagined to the secrets of her own heart.”
Kidman’s character, a gray-haired local mother named Julia, plays a key role in Robin’s quest, as her story intersects with the latter’s search for the perpetrator. The superstar boarded season 2 back in June, joining Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie, David Dencik (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures), and Ewen Leslieas (Janet King).
Co-created by Oscar-winning filmmaker Jane Campion and Gerard Lee, who return as co-writers for China Girl, Top of the Lake first premiered to critical acclaim over three years ago in 2013. In addition to Moss’ Golden Globe, the series’ first season also won an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography for a Miniseries or Movie, and was additionally honored at the BAFTAs, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, and Producers Guild of America Awards.
Top of the Lake: China Girl ‘s debut episode — co-directed by Campion and Ariel Kleiman — is set to premiere stateside sometime in 2017 on SundanceTV and Hulu. It will air on BBC Two in the U.K. Check out Kidman’s new look in the image above.
