Is ''Desperate Housewives'' a comedy? -- Some dispute whether the hit ABC dramedy should have been entered as a drama for awards show consideration

Comedy or Error? In what's sure to be a provocative Golden Globe race, ABC's Desperate Housewives is up for best comedy series against more obvious laughers like NBC sitcom Will & Grace and Fox's Arrested Development.

Creator Marc Cherry, who says Touchstone TV submitted the show as comedy rather than drama, admits ''it was going to be an odd fit either way, and the thinking was that comedy is a weaker category [drama noms include HBO's The Sopranos and Fox's 24]. I understand why that decision might raise a few eyebrows, but I kind of thought that would have been put to bed with Ally McBeal winning the Emmy for best comedy.'' Adds Cherry: ''One of the things I'm trying to shake up is the perception that comedy is a half hour and drama is an hour.''

Why stop there? Jokes one competitor, exec producer Lee Aronsohn: ''We're entering Two and a Half Men in the best foreign film category. We think we have a real shot.''
