The If At First You Don't Succeed Award goes to...

Uma Thurman and Renee Zellweger

FOR Kill Bill — Vol. 2 (Thurman) and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (Zellweger)

WHY? Both actresses are nominated this year for playing characters that previously earned them Golden Globe nominations. Uma received her second nod this year for playing Kill Bill's murderous Bride, even though it's really just one performance split into two movies. Renée is recognized again for her return as sweetly awkward diarist Bridget Jones in The Edge of Reason, which only felt like the same movie. Last year, Charlize Theron's real-life killer in Monster beat Thurman's fictional one, and Zellweger's pudgy publicist lost in 2002 to Nicole Kidman's sleek singer in Moulin Rouge. Thurman and Zellweger are both long shots again this year, though it's not as if these actresses haven't racked up Golden Globe frequent flyer miles. Thurman has logged four nominations and one win, for Hysterical Blindness. Zellweger has been nominated five times and has won three times, for Nurse Betty, Chicago, and Cold Mountain.

(Golden Globe nominations: Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama [Thurman] and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy [Zellweger])
