Writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson's beside-the-point setup AVP: Alien vs. Predator has billionaire Charles Bishop Weyland (Aliens alum Lance Henriksen) recruiting a team to explore an ancient pyramid beneath Antarctica actually a cage match venue, as the poor simps learn, for Predators hunting Aliens as a rite of passage. Anderson (Resident Evil) won't make anyone forget Ridley Scott or James Cameron, but he does deliver creature-on-creature action that will set your inner adolescent stirring, if not quite bursting out of your chest. EXTRAS Anderson's commentary with his actors is its own sort of free-for-all, as he plays to fanboys by citing the film's various acknowledgments of the two franchises, while requisite Alien-wranglin' heroine Sanaa Lathan supplies the new-bie perspective by noting which effects look like ''flying vaginas.'' Anderson also gives props to the '90s AVP comics that catalyzed the crossover, with a thorough sampling of them in DVD-ROM materials.
