With Aaron McGruder's Boondocks routinely getting yanked from papers for bashing everything from Bush to BET, it's no surprise the cartoonist has struggled to bring the racially charged strip to TV. The shocker? HBO Family almost bought it. ''It was like, 'Okay, do I make this deal or risk [the show] never being made ever?''' says McGruder. The strip, about disgruntled black kids shunted to suburbia, premiered nationally in 1999. Fortunately, Huey, McGruder's preteen protagonist, won't actually have to share a channel with Harold and the Purple Crayon, since the series landed in Cartoon Network's late-night Adult Swim lineup. McGruder is stingy with details: Regina King and comedian John Witherspoon will provide voices, but otherwise he'll only say, ''It might end up making some people mad.''
