LO DOWN After a string of not-so-hot movies, Jennifer Lopez (NOT J. Lo anymore, thank you very much) returns with Monster-in-Law
Monster In Law: Melissa Mosley

Jennifer Lopez
Is it just us, or has the newlywed triple hyphenate (who just pulled a P. Diddy, reportedly asking fans to stop calling her J. Lo) become a trifle dull? ''Get Right,'' the first single off Rebirth — her first album of new material in almost three years (dropping March 1) — is catchy but unmemorable, and she certainly isn't getting much right on film; Shall We Dance was her latest to stiff. Still, we're intrigued by May's Monster-in-Law, in which Lopez goes mano a mano with the legendary Jane Fonda. ''Jennifer has a multifaceted career,'' says Monster co-producer Chris Bender, ''and Jane did the same thing back in the '80s with her aerobics. Pinning them against each other makes this something larger than life.'' We'll say — but as for that name request? Dream on, kid! Speaking of...

Jane Fonda
She precedes her first film role in 15 years with a memoir, My Life So Far (out April 5). But will the famously political lightning rod — who earned plenty of haters with her Vietnam-era views — reopen war wounds by recounting her activism? ''That happens with anyone in the public eye who has taken stands that not everyone agrees with,'' says Random House executive editor Kate Medina. ''That's not really what the book is about.'' Still, it wouldn't hurt if Monster is actually good. (See: Streisand, Barbra in Meet the Fockers.)

Whitney Houston
BMG North America chair and CEO Clive Davis, the guru behind Houston's biggest hits, reteams with the singer in March to record what he calls an ''album of Whitney Houston music.'' But will expected appearances on troubled hubby Bobby Brown's upcoming VH1 reality series, and historically erratic behavior, sideline her yet again? ''Whitney knows that it's up to her,'' says Davis, who expects to beat the disappointing 1 million sales for 2002's Just Whitney.... ''Nobody has to lecture her. She knew what she was getting into when she came onto this.'' Just remember Whitney: ''Crack is wack.''
