Everyone is wondering how Chris Rock will put his stamp on the Oscars as this year's host. Well, get ready. He has already joked that he will do everything in his power to ensure that at least one of his favorites wins.
The outspoken comic has made it no secret that he is supporting Ray's Jamie Foxx to win the Best Actor statuette. ''I am rooting for Jamie, and if he doesn't win, I'm going to talk about it on the show,'' Rock told the New York Times. Of course the host has no say in the outcome, so what happens if Foxx comes up short, or isn't even nominated? ''I'll take an Oscar from one of the sound or light people that win and give it to him,'' Rock said. ''Jamie Foxx is not going to walk out of that place without an Oscar.''
Let's hope the current Oscar wisdom prevails. Foxx seems like a shoo-in for a nomination for Best Actor, and is a favorite to win. He has already received the award from several critics' groups, and just last week won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for portraying R&B legend Ray Charles. His acceptance speech, which started with rousing a capella singing and ended with tears as he paid tribute to his recently deceased grandmother, provided one of the few moments of genuine excitement of the ceremony telecast.
So stay tuned. The nominations for the 77th Annual Academy Awards will be announced on Jan. 25; Rock will preside over the live broadcast from the Kodak Theatre on ABC on Feb. 27.
