Months after his death, Rodney Dangerfield is still inspiring laughter.

After the comedian's funeral last fall, Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock encouraged HBO execs to air some of Dangerfield's old concert footage for a new generation, according to a report in Variety. Those discussions have led the network to greenlight a documentary series about the history of stand-up comedy, a project that Seinfeld and Rock have bandied about for years.

Variety reports that HBO is in discussions with Ric Burns, who has done multipart documentaries on New York and the Civil War (the latter with brother Ken Burns), to direct the series.
