Is January the new October? Three weeks after the impressive debut of freaky drama White Noise, Robert De Niro's scary thriller Hide and Seek topped the box office charts with a $22 million debut, according to studio estimates. That's just lower than the $24.1 million gross posted by White Noise in its first weekend, suggesting that the first month of the year might be as horror-happy a time frame as the weeks before Halloween.
Placing second was Ice Cube's family comedy Are We There Yet?, which saw a second-weekend drop of only 9 percent to $17 million, while the multiple Oscar nominee Million Dollar Baby capitalized on its fantastic reviews by expanding to over 2,000 theaters and grossing $11.8 million.
Coach Carter and Meet the Fockers completed the top five with $8 million and $7.6 million, respectively, followed by another Best Picture nominee, The Aviator, which expanded to the tune of $7.5 million.
Though Hide and Seek did well, the news wasn't so good for the weekend's other new horror flick, Alone in the Dark. The Tara Reid/Christian Slater was met with horrendous reviews, and apparently audiences listened by staying away. Though it premiered in over 2,000 theaters, it grossed only $2.5 million, placing 14th. Apparently, Alone in the Dark described anyone who actually went to see it.
