Has Million Dollar Baby grounded The Aviator's Oscar chances? Sure looks that way, given Clint Eastwood's victory at the Directors Guild Awards on Saturday. Eastwood beat four other contenders for the top feature prize, most notably, Aviator helmer and six-time DGA bridesmaid Martin Scorsese. The DGA winner has gone on to win the Oscar in 50 out of the last 56 years — and the Academy usually doesn't split the Best Director and Best Picture prizes. Still, Aviator won the Producers Guild Award last week, a similarly accurate predictor of Oscar success, and it has the most Academy Award nominations with 11 (Million Dollar Baby has seven).
Another possible sign of Oscar success came for The Story of the Weeping Camel, which won the DGA's documentary prize. A film about Mongolian nomads, Weeping Camel is up for the Best Documentary Oscar against such better-known competitors as Supersize Me and Tupac: Resurrection.
