They're desperate fictions. That's what Marcia Cross, who plays the Stepford-perfect Bree Van De Kamp on Desperate Housewives, says of the rumors that have been buzzing about the Internet and the tabloid press over the last week, rumors that say the actress will out herself in gay magazine The Advocate in an issue timed to coincide with the May TV ratings sweeps period. Earlier this week, the Advocate denied it was planning an article about Cross, and now, the star herself has denied she's a lesbian, in a statement issued by her spokesperson. ''In response to the recent rumors about Marcia Cross, they are completely untrue,'' rep Heidi Slan said Tuesday. ''She is, however, very supportive of the gay and lesbian community.''

The rumors, which started at online forum DataLounge and were reprinted in the New York Daily News and the British press, also said that one of the Housewives characters will come out of the closet in an upcoming episode. Speculation centers on Bree's son, pot-smoking hit-and-run driver Andrew (Shawn Pyfrom).

In other Housewives news, USA Today reports that ABC has lavished bonuses of $250,000 on Cross and each of her three fellow lead actresses, plus slightly smaller bonuses for supporting players Nicollette Sheridan and James Denton and even smaller windfalls for the rest of the large cast. Guess the only L word on that set is largesse.
