The fifth book in Haig's ongoing series starring Army lawyer Sean Drummond, Assassin amps up the stakes as high as a political thriller can: Would-be presidential assassins show they mean business by murdering the chief of staff and several others. Haig, son of ex-secretary of state Alexander Haig and himself a former special assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, nails the poisonous ''cover your ass at all costs'' nature of Washington bureaucracy. His grasp of character and humor, however, is tenuous. Surely, readers can discern that Drummond has authority issues without him reminding us (''I'm not an easy man to have working for you'') or that something is supposedly funny without the ''hah-hah'' asides.
