To that end, HBO has a few contenders. This fall's Rome is one of the net's most expensive shows ever, and next year's drama Big Love should prove provocative — it's about polygamists. And the network isn't above putting its stamp on an old formula: A multicamera (read: traditional) sitcom is in the works with comic Louis C.K. But it's also counting on projects from the Sex crew. Expectations are high for the June debut of The Comeback, a comedy starring Friends' Lisa Kudrow and cocreated by Sex exec producer Michael Patrick King. In addition to whatever Parker eventually produces, Cynthia Nixon will star in the telepic Warm Springsand Kim Cattrall has the late-night doc Sexual Intelligence (a holding deal with Kristin Davis recently expired).

''The attention on us now wasn't there before,'' says HBO Entertainment president Carolyn Strauss. ''We just have to keep open to really good ideas and not be afraid to fail.'' And, just in case, keep Chris Noth on speed dial.
