Barney Martin, an actor who achieved his greatest fame late in his career — playing Jerry Seinfeld's father, Morty on the comedian's titular sitcom — died Monday of cancer in his Studio City, Calif., home. He was 82.

Martin was the last (and best known) of three actors to play Morty Seinfeld during the show's nine-year run. The former New York City police officer started writing for television in the 1950s, and moved in front of the cameras a decade later. Aside from his Seinfeld run, Martin's best-known gigs included originating the character of Amos ''Mr. Cellophane'' Hart in Bob Fosse's Broadway musical Chicago, and playing Liza Minnelli's dad in the film Arthur.

Martin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine; a son, Donald; two grandsons and two great-grandsons.
