While Alan Moore and Frank Miller were deconstructing superhero archetypes in the 1980s, Matt Wagner was reconstructing them with his seminal series, Mage: The Hero Discovered. Blending Arthurian lore and neo-noir, Wagner's epic told the story of schlubsome Kevin Matchstick, who is tutored by an impish wizard to battle demons, dragons, and other baddies. It's typical of Mage's great humor that this Excalibur is a baseball bat. Newly collected, Mage deserves to be discovered anew.
