Black Dialogue (2005)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Release Date: Mar 22, 2005; Lead Performance: The Perceptionists; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Hailing from America's biggest university town, it's fitting that this Boston trio's debut has an earnest collegiate vibe — from clunky but heartfelt agitprop (''Memorial Day''), to poetic romance (''Love Letters''), to Afrocentric empowerment (''Black Dialogue''). Beyond the liberal-arts requirements, there's a bone-shaking kegger jam, ''Party Hard,'' perhaps the only hip-hop song with an antismoking message.
