No director puts the TLC in DVD like Robert Rodriguez, who actually prefers the DVDs of his movies to their theatrical versions.
If somebody said to you, ''Hey, no one watches extras, why bother?''. . .
I'd say, ''Well, it's important as a filmmaker to have some closure over
your movie.'' That's your last record of your statement, the DVD.
So
that's why you put together your own extras?
That's so they're from the
moviemaker, as compared to the traditional making-of, which is usually
fluff put together by marketing departments. [Laughs] A lot of people
who watch DVDs are people who are interested in, if not moviemaking,
then creativity in general. So I try to lean it in that direction.
That
explains the random cooking lesson you give on the Once Upon a Time in
Mexico disc.
[Laughs] I have so many friends who don't know how to cook.
Whenever I make something for my kids, they're always so appreciative.
They go, ''This is the best hamburger.'' And I'm like, ''That's because I
made it with love.'' I'm not making it for profit or for money. They can
taste the difference.
