Release Date: Apr 12, 2005; Lead Performance: The Perishers

There's something to be said for a band that can walk the line between rock and a soft place. Coldplay have certainly mastered it; Keane and Travis know it well. Sweden's the Perishers don't stray far from the path — they've got the wistful, literate lyrics, the whisking percussion and lilting melodies — but Let There Be Morning is a lovely twilight trip all the same. Vocalist-guitarist Ola Klüft defiantly trades in strength for subtlety; occasionally, his hazy compositions simply melt away. On tracks like album opener ''Weekend'' and first single ''Sway,'' though, he gives exactly enough.
