Right now the scariest thing about the movie business is how dead it is. So far this year, box office receipts are down 4 percent from last year, even with rising ticket prices. Well, it won't get much better this weekend, since the only new wide release is The Amityville Horror, a remake of the 1979 cult classic.
The new version, starring Blade: Trinity's Ryan Reynolds and a bunch of people you've never heard of, may have the weekend to itself, but don't expect it to break any box office records. Still, its built-in horror fan base should propel it to No. 1 with a debut around $20 million.
Last week's top film, Sahara, will likely see a 45 percent drop to $10 million, followed by Sin City and Fever Pitch with $8 million and $7 million, respectively. And Guess Who could enjoy its final weekend in the top five with a measly $4 million. Where are the summer blockbusters when we need them?
