This Cincinnati-bred band trawls melodies out of the muck of their own melancholy, sounding a bit like Nick Cave without the Weimar affectations on Alligator. The National's deft feints away from fixed lyrical meaning on tracks like ''Looking for Astronauts'' and ''Daughters of the Soho Riots'' leave the listener with an album that seems to be fumbling and lurching toward some elusive serenity. It doesn't make for the most up-with-people listening experience, but the twilit melodies and Matt Berninger's gossamer vocals will haunt your troubled dreams.
