On ''In the Grass,'' former Helium frontwoman Mary Timony sings majestically about both Jesus and ''jamming to the Fat Boys,'' without a hint of irony. Her third solo album is full of these juxtapositions, which drop fantastical bits into the gloom of everyday life and saturate indie prog-rock in a hypermelodic wash. While Timony lays on the dreaminess a bit thick at times, Ex Hex's eerie beauty is vivid enough to keep you under its spell nearly all the way through.
